Why are protective nut- and bolt caps applied?

Protective nut and thread cover caps

Bolted and screwed connections are important structural elements and it may be necessary to protect them with a protective cap. Covering bolts and nuts with a protection cap or cover cap has a number of advantages:

  • gives a visually more attractive finish
  • increases safety; protruding parts are covered
  • protects and preserves against external influences, such as damage, dirt, corrosion (rust) or UV and chemical action
  • makes preservative coatings unnecessary
  • simplifies service work, such as reviewing bolted connections

What types and sizes of protective nut and thread covers are available?

Verpas offers plastic nut and bolt caps for metric thread sizes from M3 ascending to M95 as well as for UNC ¼" to 3 ½". For protecting and covering internal threads, threaded holes and threaded fittings, a comprehensive range is available under our sectionThread and bore protection

Plastic nut caps and cover caps are supplied in two varieties:

  • De regular quality nut and bolt caps are suitable for a neat optical finish, increasing safety and, to a limited extent, preservation. As applied to furniture, playground equipment, trailers, etc.
  • The industrial grade cover caps for nuts and threads are specifically suitable for preserving and protecting bolted joints and threaded ends. Applications include technical plants, construction, traffic, maritime, offshore and wind turbines, etc.

Protective nut and bolt caps are available in both fixed-heights and telescopic versions. It is also possible to protect washers, counter nuts or high nuts, or just uncovered threadeds. If that is not enough, there are also possibilities for customisation.

How are protective nut and bolt caps mounted?

Mounting a bolt and nut cap or cover cap can follow different principles. For example, there are self-clamping versions that simply clamp around the hexagon of a bolt or nut. There are also bolt and nut caps and covers that are screwed or clamped onto the thread. Finally, there is a two-part version with a base and a cover cap; this version is generally used in playground environments.

Covers caps for screws

By using universal plastic covers and decorative caps, screw heads are neatly concealed. Covering screw heads is not only decorative, but also prevents corrosion and dirt accumulation. These covers are available for screws with:

  • Phillips head (PH)
  • Pozidriv cross-head (PZ)
  • Torx (TX)
  • Allen Hexagon socket (H)
  • Head hole screw heads or blind rivets
  • Hexagon heads with washer - Tek screws for facades

Generally, the cover caps are pressed into the screw head. They are self-clamping and therefore easy to fit afterwards. There are also two-part covers, consisting of a washer and a clamp on cover cap. This version is also easy to fit, but the washer should already be applied during screwing.

Covers, caps or decorative caps for screws are used as a finish for screw heads on e.g. furniture, kitchens, interior and facade systems.
